Paul and I have a new goal for the month of September - we’re simply not buying it. We’ve been looking at ways to save money and I remember hearing about this book “Not Buying It” by Judith Levine. I’ll admit, I haven’t read the book…yet… (I am in the middle of “Hunger Games”.) but the concept seems intriguing. For an entire year, Levine bought only the necessities and in the process saved a whole lot of money. We’re only testing out the concept for the month of September but I think it will help us sort out what really is a necessity.
Here’s some of the things we’re not buying:
I’ll post out progress here, if anything to help keep me accountable. I don’t think this is going to be an easy month!
Wanna join in the fun? If enough would like to get involved perhaps we’ll start a Facebook group or blog to share experiences!

The great bounty of my garden! The dirt out here is like cement. So, if I can grow one squash and 3 cherry tomatoes, I’ll call it a success. I suspect we’ll end up with more zucchini and squash, after all we did plant 6 plants of each. I figured with that many plants we’d have a good chance of getting something out of our garden!

This is Paul. I kinda like him! If you haven’t seen Paul in a while you’ll soon realize he’s lost a LOT of weight. He’s been working so hard to eat healthy and exercise. His will power has amazed me. His next goal is to run a half marathon later this summer. He’s really good to stay on his training schedule.
So, congrats Paul you look great and are such a great example to me. Go Pablo!

I don’t claim to be a photographer, but if I do say so myself this photograph of a s’more is amazing. Or maybe it’s just that the s’more looks amazing. Mmmmm! Can’t wait to go camping again SOON!

Today was another great day at TTIX. I enjoyed lunch on campus with some great people I’ve worked with and met in educational technology conferences. After lunch we had some time, so we headed over to the Union building on campus and caught a little bit of the World Cup game. KSL was there shooting some video for their story on Utahns watching the World Cup. The back of my head was in one of their shots and they interviewed my co-presenter from this week, who is a huge soccer fan. Best line ever, “Work should be cancelled for a month!”
You can catch the full story below:

I’m not the hugest soccer fan, but the World Cup is good times! I hope I can catch a few games!

Here’s my presentation from today’s TTIX conference (Teaching With Technology Idea Exchange). We covered why video is an effective tool for instruction and how to create instructional video. Exciting stuff!

Here’s the video Paul and I made to play at my Grandpa’s viewing. It includes a random selection of photos from his life, as well as memories from his family. It’s pretty long, but I figured family that might not have seen it at the viewing, can see it here. Thanks everyone for sending written memories and pictures!

Saturday was such a beautiful cool, sunny, spring day! We went down to Thanksgiving Point and checked out the Tulip Festival.

We’ve been lucky to have great neighbors. Our next door neighbor (well, former next door neighbor, we’re sad they’ve moved!) started a cool campaign for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital to collection one million dollars in donations for the hospital. I think it’s a great project and is a great example to all of us how one person can make a difference. So, I’m asking all my (many) readers to help Give One Million, even if your part of the one million is just one dollar. Maybe your donation isn’t a dollar, but some real-estate or a mention on your blog.
Check out the blog, it really is motivating to see how one person can make a difference.
Help GIVE ONE MILLION!!!
